Product Overview
In my review of Samsung Galaxy S10 I mentioned that there are four models of it. The Galaxy S10e is the “lite” version of them all. By that I mean it is the most affordable and probably the model that makes compromises on a few features available with the base and pro models. It still remains a flagship smartphone regardless and buying it for close to 80% the value of the base model (S10, S10+ or even the S10 5G) means you will still part with some big bucks to get your hand on this premium device.
Some reviewers argue that Samsung’s Galaxy S10e is the direct competitor of iPhone XR (check it out on www.phoneplacekenya.com). I think I agree. And I also think Galaxy S10 for XS and Galaxy S10+ for XS Max. This is no coincidence friends; it is a deliberate counter move by Samsung after Apple (for the first time) released a choice of three for the same smartphone. This however is not a comparison review so I will stick to the script; let us take a look at the Galaxy S10e in detail.
Design and build
If I had a wish, I would wish for the Galaxy S10e for first its looks. You see this phone on any display right away you fall in love with it. The front especially has premium design with bezels so slim and a hole punch camera that allows you even more display estate. It feel very comfortable and compact in the hand you wouldn’t even think it is a 5.8 inches smartphone.
That back panel it has is made of glass (corning gorilla 5 for protection) and thanks to it wireless battery charging is supported on the S10e. We see a dual camera module on the back.
Unlike its mates the S10 and S10+, this one has its fingerprint scanner side mounted on the power button which is a good place to have it considering the weird placement on the back of the S9 that was hard to reach.
Be informed that the S10e has waterproofing with IP68 water and dust resistance. It has Samsung pay and also worth mentioning is its very impressively audible AKG loudspeakers and great sound via the 3.5mm jack.
With regards things looks, design and overall beauty, Samsung Galaxy S10e nails it in all ways.
Display
So besides having a smaller display than the other S10’s the S10e still rocks on a Dynamic AMOLED capacitive touchscreen that produces HDR10 images and, it has a 1080 x 2280 pixels, 19:9 ratio (~438 ppi density) on a 5.8 inches panel, comes with Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection and as always, there is Always-on display.
Samsung majors on the display of close to all their smartphones, what reason would they possibly have to give excuses with the Galaxy S10e? I will put it as simply as I can, the display of the S10e is brilliantly one of a kind.
Primary camera
The dual camera setup on the back comprises of a 12 MP, f/1.5-2.4, 26mm (wide), 1/2.55″, 1.4µm, Dual Pixel PDAF, OIS lens and a 16 MP, f/2.2, 12mm (ultra wide) shooter which with you can shoot 4k videos 2160p@60fps, 1080p@240fps, 720p@960fps, HDR, dual-video rec.
On the 10 and 10+ you get a third lens which is a telephoto camera. And in as much as that is the only advantage they have over the 10e’s camera, I still think the difference is the same since one out of ten times you will find yourself using that lens.
Performance of the primary camera of the S10e is just as great as on the other models it was announced with.
Selfie camera
It is a 10 MP wide lens. Be careful when taking selfies because this one will blow your mind- impressive and crisp. Video recording with it is 2160p@30fps.
Platform
Samsung Galaxy S10e offers you the best of performance with its Snapdragon or Exynos chipsets. I thought the sacrifices I mentioned at the beginning of this review would mostly affect the performance of the S10e the most but on the contrary, you get the same chipset on it as you do on the other models. That can only mean one thing, a beta version of a pro that performs just as strongly as the pro itself. A perfect example of ‘when the student knows all the teacher does,’ scenario.
Memory
So the base model of Galaxy S10e runs on 6GB of RAM but there is an 8GB RAM version as well. Internal storage is 128GB and 256GB respectively and with the use of a micro SD card you can still get up to an additional 512 GB.
Battery
Non-removable Li-Ion 3100 mAh battery
-Fast battery charging 15W
-Fast wireless charging 15W
-Power bank/Reverse wireless charging 9W which allows you to charge other smartphones with the S10e. This feature works with phones and devices that support wireless charging only.
